How Lunar and Octopus Energy are bringing endless clean energy to Texas homes
Lunar partnered with Octopus Energy, the UK's largest retail electricity provider and a growing US clean energy retailer, to offer Texas homeowners a single package: a 30-kilowatt-hour home battery, a three-year fixed-rate electricity plan, and automatic enrollment in a virtual power plant (VPP).
The challenge
Texas is one of the most dynamic energy markets in the country, with competitive retail pricing, real price volatility, and growing demand for solutions that give customers more control. It's exactly the kind of market we built for.
But homeowners there who wanted a battery faced a maze of decisions: find a contractor, choose an electricity plan, figure out how to enroll in a virtual power plant. Even then, the upfront cost put it out of reach for many.
Octopus Energy wanted to replace that maze with one clear path: one battery, one energy plan, one way to join the grid of the future — which meant pricing a fixed-rate plan around real battery performance, automating VPP enrollment, and removing every point of friction in between.
That required one partner to own the whole project: designing the program from the ground up, recruiting and managing an installer network that could get batteries into homes on schedule, and running it day to day, keeping hundreds of batteries coordinated and grid-ready.
The solution
Lunar delivered exactly that. Together with Octopus Energy, Lunar built Texas homeowners a single package: a 30-kilowatt-hour home battery, a three-year fixed-rate electricity plan, and automatic enrollment in a VPP. Homeowners lease the battery with no upfront cost, and it works quietly in the background, stabilizing their bill, providing backup power, and strengthening a cleaner grid.
Beyond owning the hardware, the warranty, and the customer relationship for the life of the system, Lunar designed and now runs the full program on Octopus's behalf:
Program design: Lunar shaped the offer end to end, from eligibility rules to how the Lunar System, energy plan, and VPP work together as one product for the homeowner.
Installer deployment: Lunar built the enrollment portal and customer journey, then built the installer network — handling everything from accurate incentive calculations to terms and conditions — so batteries reach homes reliably and on schedule.
Program delivery: Lunar runs day-to-day operations for Octopus, from customer support to ongoing performance monitoring.
VPP operation: Lunar's Gridshare Platform keeps every battery in the fleet coordinated and dispatch-ready, so the grid gets flexible power exactly when it's needed.
What's next
This is the first partnership of its kind, not the last. The model we're building with Octopus Energy is one we expect to see replicated in other regions as Texas proves out what flexible, distributed home batteries can do for the grid.
As Lunar Founder Kunal Girotra put it: "This is a blueprint we hope to replicate across other markets. Data centers are a next target — using distributed batteries to expand local grid capacity and speed up interconnection."
Lunar brings not just great hardware, but a shared vision for how energy should work for customers. We’ve found real alignment in how we think about flexibility, affordability, and making these systems easy to adopt, which is what makes this partnership so compelling.
