How Lunar and Octopus Energy are helping Texan homes help the Texan grid

5 min read

Lunar Energy partnered with Octopus Energy to offer Texas homeowners a single package: backup power from a 30kWh Lunar Battery paired with a three-year fixed-rate electricity plan at a market-low rate. For Octopus, each battery does double duty: it backs up the home while also charging and discharging based on ERCOT’s real-time power market prices, helping reduce the cost of serving that customer.

The challenge

Texas is one of the most dynamic energy markets in the country: competitive retail pricing, an energy-only wholesale market, and a growing appetite for more control over energy costs. Bundling smart home batteries with retail electricity is a great solution, but it means navigating a maze of decisions: find an installer partner, choose an electricity plan, then figure out how to make the battery pay for itself in a market that moves every 5 minutes. And, even for homeowners ready to make that leap, the upfront cost often puts it out of reach for many.

Octopus Energy wanted to replace that maze with one clear path: one battery, one energy plan. That meant pricing a competitive rate plan backed by real battery performance, and clearing away every point of friction between a homeowner and a working system.

It also meant Octopus needed a way to actually afford that pricing, reducing the cost of serving each customer, not just the customer's own bill.

Doing that took one partner willing to own the whole project: designing the program from the ground up, building an installer network that could get batteries into homes on schedule, and running the operation day to day.

The solution

Together, Lunar and Octopus Energy built PowerStore, Octopus's new plan for Texas homeowners: a 30kWh Lunar Battery and a three-year energy plan at 8 cents per kWh bundled into one package.

There's no upfront cost. Homeowners pay $45 a month to lease the battery, with the option to buy it outright after five years, or at fair market value once the 10-year contract ends. It works quietly in the background, keeping the essentials running if the power goes out, while homeowners benefit from an affordable energy plan.

The plan is available to homeowners in the Houston and Dallas areas, whether they already have solar or not, and whether they're an existing Octopus Energy customer or brand new.

The battery serves double duty in the home, not only backing up homes when there are outages, but also actively participating in energy arbitrage on behalf of the supplier. This is the core of what Lunar Enterprise delivers for Octopus: integrated technology and services that reduce the cost to serve each customer through dynamic energy arbitrage against ERCOT's real-time prices. Lunar’s Gridshare platform keeps an eye on the wholesale price applicable to each customer, and then controls each battery to buy power when prices are low and sell when they're high. This means Octopus’ customers aren’t using grid power when prices peak, reducing how much Octopus needs to spend in the wholesale market to serve their retail customers. And homeowners aren’t charged for electricity used specifically for market arbitrage. Any energy used for this purpose is credited back at the customer’s contracted electricity rate.

But Lunar Enterprise brought more together than just hardware:

Program design: Lunar helped shape the offer from eligibility rules to how the battery and the energy plan work together as one product for the homeowner.

Hardware deployment: Lunar built the installer network in Dallas and Houston for this program so new PowerStore customers could get quality installations done fast. This included everything from site survey qualification to scheduling the installation. Customer feedback so far has been strongly positive, with praise for both the sales experience and the installation.

What's next

This is the first partnership of its kind for Octopus and Lunar, not the last. PowerStore is live today in Texas homes, with plans to expand across the state and into new markets soon.
