Gridshare supports TEPCO’s Carbon Neutral Program in Japan

Gridshare is now supporting TEPCO Energy Partner (TEPCO EP) with the launch of its new Carbon Neutral Program — a major step toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future in Japan. With 29 million customers and 220 TWh of annual sales, TEPCO EP is one of the largest electricity retailers in the world.
This program aims to accelerate the country’s transition to carbon neutrality by making smarter use of renewable energy — starting in the home. By automatically optimizing when residential batteries charge and discharge based on wholesale prices, the program helps TEPCO EP reduce their exposure to wholesale price peaks, reducing the need to buy expensive fossil fuel power. With customers compensated for their participation, this service enables greater grid stability, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, and more value for TEPCO EP‘s customers.
Why Gridshare?
TEPCO EP selected Gridshare to provide intelligent, remote control of the home batteries enrolled in the program. Our AI-powered software platform seamlessly coordinates thousands of distributed energy resources— optimizing for both the grid’s and customers’ needs.
With Gridshare, TEPCO EP is able to:
- Reduce its exposure to wholesale price spikes through dynamic load shaping
- Co-optimizes customers’ ToU rate with utility VPP events
- Maximize renewable energy integration by managing variable supply
- Reward customers with financial incentives for supporting the grid
- Advance Japan’s national decarbonization goals
This latest program builds on a strong foundation. More than 12,000 TEPCO EP customer batteries are already on the Gridshare platform. Together with our partners ITOCHU and Gridshare Japan, we’ve delivered successful Virtual Power Plant (VPP) trials to TEPCO EP, which helped set the stage for this commercial rollout, and a similar service for Tohoku Electric Power, another significant milestone in our Japanese operations.
What’s next: market participation in 2026
Japan’s energy system is evolving rapidly. Starting in 2026, residential distributed energy resources, such as those enabled by Gridshare, will be eligible to participate in Japan’s transmission-level capacity market and balancing markets, unlocking new VPP revenue opportunities and accelerating the transition to a more distributed, flexible grid.
We’re proud to support TEPCO in this next phase and excited to help move Japan closer to a greener, more resilient power system.
