Lunar and Sunrun: turning home batteries into America's largest residential VPP

5 min read

Sunrun, the largest solar and battery installer in the US, needed a technology partner to run its growing fleet of home batteries as a single, coordinated grid resource. Lunar became that partner, operating Sunrun's Virtual Power Plants nationwide.

The challenge

Sunrun had tens of thousands of home batteries installed across the US and a growing list of utility commitments to meet. But delivering virtual power plant services across multiple states, utilities, OEMS, and market rules, they needed every battery to respond at the right moment, deliver the right amount of power, and leave the customer better off for participating. Doing that at scale, reliably, day after day, requires the right platform.

The solution

That's exactly what Lunar delivered. Lunar's Gridshare Platform connects to Sunrun's fleet, spanning devices from multiple manufacturers, and turns it into something utilities can actually count on: a coordinated virtual power plant that responds to grid signals in real time across multiple US territories and regulatory environments.

Our technology handles everything behind the scenes. It monitors every device in the fleet, forecasts available capacity a day ahead, builds optimised dispatch plans, and executes them automatically. When a utility sends a signal, the fleet responds. When the event ends, devices return to optimizing for the customer.

The results

Since 2022, we have operated some of the largest residential VPPs in the US — including programs for PG&E, National Grid, and Eversource. To date, we have delivered:

What's next

The US energy market is moving fast. New VPP programs are coming online, more states are opening up, and the value of a well-managed residential fleet is only going to grow. Lunar’s technology is already built for what comes next — more programs, more devices, more markets, all handled automatically, in the US and globally.

  • 34,000+ third-party home battery systems across Sunrun's fleet enabled to participate in grid services.
  • 22 Sunrun’s grid service programs managed(13 currently live).
  • 170 MW of capacity operated across Sunrun's programs
  • 12.5 GWh of energy dispatched across 7,000+ dispatch events.

“Lunar managed this program seamlessly for us, and proved VPPs can be a reliable grid resource at scale. Lunar stands out not only for its technology but also for its committed team, always ready to collaborate with us on developing new features and future programs.”
