Lunar Enterprise will operate WestLight Energy's first residential VPP program


WestLight Energy, the Community Choice Aggregator formerly known as Peninsula Clean Energy, is partnering with Lunar to launch its residential battery load shift program this month.
The program will use Lunar's Gridshare DERMS Platform as the virtual power plant (VPP) engine behind WestLight Energy's load shifting program, orchestrating a fleet of residential batteries to reduce strain on the grid exactly when it's needed. Our partner, Haven Energy, manages customer recruitment, agreements, and installation contractors for the program, while hardware partners supply the battery systems themselves.
The first cohort focuses on low-income households already enrolled in WestLight Energy's Solar + Battery Savings Program, which installs solar and battery systems at no cost using state incentive funding.
In exchange for free installation and lower bills, customers agree to let WestLight Energy bring their battery into the load shift program. The goal is simple: optimize customers' savings while supporting the local grid.
Behind the scenes, Lunar Enterprise runs the software that makes this possible. Our Gridshare Platform orchestrates the entire fleet of home batteries and runs the daily dispatch strategy that dictates when each one charges and discharges, with a goal of delivering more than 95% of the maximum available energy across the aggregated fleet during dispatch events.
The strategy isn't fixed; it moves charge and discharge windows to shift with the seasons and with each customer's rate structure. The result: every battery discharges at the moment it's needed, without WestLight Energy having to manage a single home individually.
Two safeguards run underneath every dispatch decision. First, WestLight Energy and Gridshare always keep at least 20% of a battery's charge in reserve, so customers still have backup power at home no matter what the grid needs. Second, when an alert signals severe weather is on the way, Gridshare automatically pauses dispatch and charges the battery to 100%, so home backup takes priority over grid support every time. Customers can support the grid without ever losing access to the reason they installed a battery in the first place.
In addition, the Gridshare Platform monitors each device's connectivity around the clock so that issues are flagged before they become problems, while also handling device enrollment and provisioning to keep the fleet running smoothly.
To give our partner full visibility into program performance, WestLight Energy has a daily dashboard and API access to device health, active enrollments, and load-shifting results—a clear, real-time view of the fleet our Gridshare Platform is managing.
WestLight Energy also receives Customer Cost Impact Reports that compare each customer's actual usage against a simulated baseline to show exactly how much he or she has saved.
WestLight Energy's residential battery load shift program is on track for its upcoming launch. It's an early step for WestLight Energy's broader load modification strategy and a model for how we can work together to give low-income households free, resilient power while making the grid smarter for everyone.
