A letter from our Founder and CEO: 10 questions about Lunar Energy

Today, as Lunar Energy announces our Series D financing round led by B Capital and Prelude Ventures, I realize there is so much to share about what we do. Lunar’s DNA has been rooted in quiet execution but we’re going to deviate from the “quiet” part and be a bit loud today. Instead of a traditional announcement, I got inspired by my son’s favorite road trip game, “20 Questions,” and decided to present Lunar’s story in a classic Q&A format. We’ll explore 10 key questions — not 20 — that explain who we are, what we build, and why our work matters for the energy industry.
I started Lunar because every home would benefit from a battery. But not just any battery — a thoughtfully designed, end-to-end personalized power plant that is intelligent - meaning it generates, stores, and shares energy seamlessly with the grid.
When I looked around, getting a battery felt like going to Fry's Electronics in the nineties and building your own computer. Pick an inverter, a battery, a smart panel and create a “Frankenstein” installation on a customer’s home. Download three apps and try to make your own sense of the data. Pray a firmware update doesn't break everything.
I knew there was a better way — one that intelligently connected these systems to the grid to add value for everyone, homes and utilities alike. Our investors believed in the same vision, and Lunar was born in fall of 2020.
Lunar is a product company. We build hardware and software to turn homes into personal & distributed power plants.
On the hardware side, we design, manufacture, and sell the Lunar System, which is a complete home energy system installed by Certified Lunar Installers.
On the software side, we have two main products. The first is bundled with the Lunar System: an intuitive app that lets homeowners see their power plant in action — its energy production, consumption, and savings. The second is Lunar Gridshare, our enterprise software platform that aggregates and monetizes thousands of home energy devices (such as home batteries, thermostats, and electric vehicles) into flexible grid resources.
On your roof, beneath each solar panel, Lunar Maximizers do what their name suggests: maximize power output. These compact devices generate 2-10% more energy than conventional inverters. That means more power from the same sunshine.
On your wall, the Lunar Battery and inverter stack vertically in a single elegant tower. You can choose 10, 15, 20, or 30kWh based on what fits your needs and your wall space. Vertical matters because space is precious. And because it's going in your home, it's designed to be wall-worthy. We don't do ugly boxes.
The Lunar Bridge connects your home to the grid and acts as your smart panel. When an outage hits, you stay in control and prioritize power to your most important loads, right from the app. The Bridge keeps the power flowing.
Together, the Lunar System adapts to wherever you are: new solar and storage, adding a battery to existing solar, or backup power on its own.
It’s simple, modular, and brilliantly designed. And there’s a lot more to come.
Visit our website, design a Lunar System for your home, and we'll connect you with an installation partner near you. They handle the purchase and installation.
We build the products. Our partners bring them to life in your home. It's a model that lets us focus on what we do best: creating brilliantly-designed products. And it lets our installation partners do what they do best: serving customers with care and expertise, every day.
Sunrun, the nation's largest distributed power company, is one of our partners. We work with dozens more Certified Lunar Installers across California. And with the money Lunar raised in this latest round, we're expanding across the nation and bringing endless clean energy to more homes.
Some companies rebrand products made overseas. We took a different path.
The entire Lunar System is designed from the ground up by our Bay Area engineering team. Every subcomponent — from DC-DC converters to battery management systems to firmware — is Lunar's intellectual property.
This matters because an end to end design creates a seamless experience. When the grid flickers, the system detects it instantly and switches to battery power so smoothly you might not even notice the street went dark. Our software thinks ahead: it prioritizes your most essential loads like refrigeration, WiFi, or cooling to keep the power flowing as long as possible. With solar panels and enough sunshine, you can ride out multi-day outages while neighbors wait for the utility truck.
We assemble all of our products in the United States: battery blocks, inverters, Maximizers, and Bridges. Lunar products qualify for both the base 30% Investment Tax Credit (ITC) and the 10% Domestic Content ITC, and are designed to comply with Foreign Entity of Concern (FEOC) regulations.
We've been investing in domestic manufacturing since our founding — long before it became an industry trend.
We launched the 20kWh Lunar System in early 2025 in California. Since then, we've deployed more than 2,000 systems with more than 40 installation partners.
With this funding, we're expanding to Texas, Utah, Nevada, and Illinois to name a few states — places with volatile electricity rates, grid instability, or strong potential for Virtual Power Plant programs. We're planning to increase deployments 4-5x this year.
Lunar AI is the brain of the Lunar System. Set it once in the Lunar App, then let it go to work.
Every day, it creates a custom energy plan for your home. It knows your utility rate structure, the weather forecast, and your usage patterns. It charges your battery from the Sun and discharges when rates peak — all while keeping an eye on solar availability.
The result: last year, our California customers saved an average of $338 through AI optimization alone. Add Virtual Power Plant program earnings — an average of $464 for participating customers — and Lunar owners saw more than $800 in annual value beyond what a traditional battery delivers.
Real money saved. Done automatically.

Gridshare is our enterprise software platform that operates one of the largest third-party residential battery fleets in the world. It works across a dozen states with large asset owners and energy retailers, including California Community Choice Aggregators.
Gridshare is device-agnostic. It connects Lunar hardware, third-party batteries, thermostats, and electric vehicles into a single intelligent network. Today, more than 100,000 devices across three continents use Gridshare to participate in capacity markets, wholesale optimization, and ancillary services.
You create clean energy at home. Gridshare combines that energy with other homes & delivers it to the grid in times of need, saves you money and makes energy affordable for everyone.
Most battery companies sell hardware and hand off the software to someone else. Most software companies try to optimize hardware they didn't design. We’re different because we bring hardware and software together. Our AI knows exactly how to squeeze every kilowatt-hour from the system.
Rather than start from scratch, we acquired the best team. In 2021, we bought Moixa, a company with a decade of machine learning expertise in distributed energy optimization. That acquisition brought us 150 million hours of real-world optimization data — the kind of experience you can't replicate overnight.
When California shifted to NEM 3.0, our software adapted instantly. As utilities roll out new programs, we'll continue to respond in real time. We've been refining this software for over a decade in electricity markets more complex than those found in the US.
Hardware and software, designed together. That's the advantage.
The energy industry is massive and needs some urgent changes if we’re going to solve the two biggest challenges facing us — exponential load growth from the AI boom and an urgent need to reduce prices for consumers.
We at Lunar believe a decentralized and bi-directional grid, with homes and businesses acting as mini-power plants together with intelligent software like Gridshare connecting homes to exchange energy with energy markets is the fastest way to increase gigawatts on the grid while reducing energy costs for consumers. And it gives them 24/7 reliable power.
Our aim is for every home in America to have a Lunar System — just like every home today has a refrigerator or an air conditioner. The centralized grid continues to be less reliable and more expensive. Homes need to become active participants in the energy system, not just passive consumers.
With this new funding, Lunar will accelerate the realization of this vision. By scaling to new states, launching new products, and participating in wholesale markets or with new utility programs, Lunar will make energy reliable, affordable, and clean for more and more people.
Lunar’s ultimate goal is to become the #1 home energy brand in America. That is what gets everyone here excited to go to work every day.
