Lunar Energy is deepening its commitment to Japan's clean energy future by supporting a new phase of growth for Gridshare Japan (“GSJ”). Formed in collaboration with existing Lunar investor ITOCHU Corporation and a consortium of new strategic partners, GSJ marks a significant step toward deploying residential energy flexibility at scale and building a more resilient, efficient energy future for the country.

Proven foundations

Gridshare is the largest edge DERMS platform operating in Japan. Since 2018, the Gridshare platform has been used in collaboration with ITOCHU to provide AI-powered optimization for its fleet of 40,000 Smart Star residential batteries. This operation has delivered over 850 million hours of bespoke control, leading to 14 percent additional savings for customers beyond default battery modes.

Gridshare is delivering demand response services for major power companies, including TEPCO Energy Partner, Inc and Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. The platform has also been successfully utilized in demand response trials with Chubu Electric Power Miraiz Co., Inc, Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc, and Shikoku Electric Power Co., Inc, demonstrating its reliability and effectiveness across the country.

Lunar joins an alliance of strategic partners

To accelerate the scaling of residential energy flexibility, GSJ has welcomed new strategic shareholders. This alliance brings together leaders across key sectors, including utility companies, OEMs, technology providers, and real estate developers.

The shareholders of GSJ now include:

  • Lunar Energy Inc.
  • ITOCHU Corporation
  • Omron Social Solutions Co., Ltd.
  • Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc.
  • Chubu Electric Power Miraiz Co., Inc.
  • Tokyu Land Corporation

Poised for growth

Japan’s balancing market is opening to residential assets in 2026, and the need for demand flexibility is growing. This new partnership aims to expand the Gridshare platform’s reach by connecting with a wide range of third-party devices (including batteries, Ecocute hot water tanks, and electric vehicles) and delivering flexibility from those devices to power companies for various use cases, including wholesale cost avoidance, network management, and ancillary services.

As part of this expansion, GSJ has also launched a new device-agnostic customer app developed by Lunar Energy to help more customers benefit from smart residential energy services. This app currently supports multiple brands of energy storage systems (ESS) and is expanding coverage to include Ecocute hot water tanks and electric vehicles (EVs).

By combining Lunar's advanced technology with the deep market reach of its partners, GSJ is poised to significantly expand the Gridshare platform's reach and functionality, building a clean, reliable power system that benefits customers and utilities alike.
